Waihi Kayak Surf Fest is run in line with the rules of the World Surf Kayak Association and is adapted for other craft not covered in these documents.
We will feature surf kayaks, wave-skis, SUPs, and sea kayaks are expanding the competition in order to accommodate the demand from sea kayakers and intermediate-level competitors.
Each participant registers for an event division that is defined by

Who the paddler is (gender, age),

Open is for any gender

Novice is a new surf paddler

Masters is for aged 65 and above

What craft they are paddling (sea kayak, surf kayak, wave-ski, WW boat, SUP)
The competition occurs over two and a half days. Each day is broken up into a series of 20 minute heats where 3-5 paddlers will compete together seeking the highest scores from the judges. A panel of 3 judges and a head judge assign scores to each wave the competitor catches and performs maneuvers on (see more on scoring below.) Each event division has at least a semi-final and final heat to decide a winner. Divisions with more competitors may also have qualifying heats.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL
The intermediate level is aimed at those with experience in surf. Anyone who is competent of basic moves, may feel free to sign up for this level. All heats are scored so it is definitely a competition! But the vibe on the water is friendly and collaborative.
SEA KAYAK
If you are a sea kayaker and can catch waves and create rides, then you are ready to compete at the intermediate level.
SURF-SPECIFIC CRAFT/KAYAK
If you surf in a sit-on-top or decked surf kayak, wave-ski, or whitewater kayak and can catch waves and make some basic turns then these divisions are for you.
